Our client aspired to create a new software product called the Quality Actionboard System that would protect hospice agencies from CMS reimbursement penalties while creating a new stream of recurring revenue for their company.
About
Background
A new government mandate had required home health & hospice agencies to provide reports with specific patient health information (PHI) to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) or face a 2% penalty on their Medicare and Medicaid reimbursements.
Our client aspired to create a new software product that would enable these agencies to easily submit this data to CMS, thereby avoiding the potentially devastating penalties. The product would add value for HEALTHCAREfirst’s existing clients while also generating recurring revenue through a subscription-based product offering.
The Challenge
A software solution of this complexity would typically require 6 months to a year or more in development and testing. However, in order to capture significant market share, our client needed this application completed and ready to take to market in 10 weeks.
On top of that, CMS required a lot of patient data, 144 fields in total. While many of these data points already existed in each hospice’s EHR system, an integration needed to be constructed in order to automatically bring in the data. This would prevent nursing staff from being bogged down by hours of manual data entry, a necessary value proposition to the agencies.
Naturally, not every agency uses the same EHR system, so a variety of systems needed integrating, including Aprima, Cerner, Allscripts, HL7, SunCoast, ZirMed, Greenway Health, The Clearing House, and Practice Insight.
Our Solution
Our goal was to construct a progressive web application that could be used by hospice agency staff from the floor, on any device. Its function would be to collect incidents and infection information, validate that the data is correct, and then securely transfer to CMS.
We consulted with an in-house analyst to gather the requirements for the project, leveraging our low-code development platform to construct and deliver the product within HEALTHCAREfirst’s required timeframe.
The solution integrated with each hospice’s EHR system to pull patient data into a consistent, standardized format. This made it possible to prepopulate hundreds of fields of patient data in the mobile app, saving nurses hours of time spent re-entering existing patient data, allowing them to continue providing quality care to their patients.
Performance
Our client said this was one of the best looking applications they had to date, making it easy to sell to their existing clients. The nurses who used the app loved how easy it was to use, even from a smartphone, which helped drive adoption and retention.
